WARSAW, Jan 9 (PRIME) -- Poland plans to sign a new gas supply contract with Russia only if the price is unlinked from oil prices, CEO of local oil and gas company PGNiG Maciej Wozniak said in an interview with Dziennik Gazeta Prawna newspaper on January 4.
The current gas contract between the states expires in 2022.
“We cannot repeat mistakes, which put Poland at a disadvantaged position. We will not sign another contract with negative and obsolete conditions, concluded for more than 20 years and envisaging a price formula rigidly connected to oil prices,” Wozniak said.
He also said that a possible new contract will not be signed for longer periods of time or for larger amounts of gas.
Poland’s annual gas consumption is around 15 billion cubic meters, of which around 10 billion cubic meters is delivered by Gazprom.
In 2015, the country launched a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal with a capacity of 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually. In June 2016, the Polish government said it planned to ensure independence from gas deliveries “from the East” using the terminal and a pipeline to the Norwegian shelf.
